A root canal is the space within the root o a tooth that connects to other parts of the tooth. The dental pulp is a soft core that extends from the crown to the tooth’s root in the jawbone. When a tooth has a cavity or becomes cracked, bacteria can enter the pulp. Once infected, the pulp can die and even the bone can decay and tooth can begin to decay causing the loss of either one.
Symptoms include:
- Hole in tooth
- Severe toothache
- Gum swelling
- Teeth become sensitive to temperature
- Pain when chewing
A root canal is necessary when a tooth becomes infected and begins to decay. The nerve becomes infected and may be dead. It is necessary for a dentist to take x-rays to examine the severity of the problem and determine the next steps that need to be taken. Once diagnosed, the remove the dead nerve from the tooth, clean the tooth, and seal it. Restoration may need to take place to protect the tooth. Root canals are necessary because any untreated infected tooth may result to tooth loss.
